Synopsis
Im Auftrag des renommierten Magazins “The New Yorker” berichtet die jüdische Philosophin Hannah Arendt 1961 vom Gerichtsverfahren gegen Adolf Eichmann und verfasst eine Aufsehen erregende Artikelserie sowie das weltberühmt gewordene Buch “Eichmann in Jerusalem – Ein Bericht von der Banalität des Bösen”.
Mit ihren scharfsinnigen Analysen widerspricht sie mutig und resolut der öffentlichen Meinung und provoziert damit heftigen Widerspruch bei all jenen, für die Abscheu und Hass die einzig angemessenen Reaktionen auf Eichmanns Taten zu sein haben. Da sich Hannah Arendt außerdem kritisch mit der Rolle der Judenräte in den von den Nazis besetzten Gebieten auseinandersetzt, lösen ihre Veröffentlichungen weltweit einen Sturm der Entrüstung aus. Ihre akademische Karriere ist gefährdet, der israelische Geheimdienst fordert von ihr, weitere Veröffentlichungen zu stoppen.
Doch die Kontroverse erfasst auch das ganz private Umfeld ihrer Freunde und Kollegen. Menschen, die sie ihr Leben lang begleitet haben, greifen sie an oder gehen auf Distanz. Aber es gibt auch echte, tiefe Freundschaften, die sich in der Krise bewähren. Für Hannah Arendt steht viel auf dem Spiel – im Spannungsfeld zwischen journalistischer Wahrhaftigkeit und persönlicher Integrität.
